About Pohorje Nature Park

Pohorje Nature Park is a mountainous nature reserve located in the northeastern part of Slovenia, encompassing the Pohorje mountain range which rises between the Drava and Savinja rivers. The park covers an area of predominantly dense spruce and beech forests, interspersed with vast subalpine meadows and peat bogs unique in the region. The park is well-known for its glacial lakes, including the picturesque Black Lake (Črno jezero), a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. Established to protect the diverse flora and fauna of this mountainous area, Pohorje features a mosaic of ecosystems with many rare and protected species, including lynx, capercaillie, and numerous endemic plants.

Historically, the Pohorje region has deep cultural roots with traditional forestry, logging, and mountain pastoralism. Today, it serves as a major outdoor recreation hub, attracting visitors with its extensive trail networks suited for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Ski resorts such as Rogla and Maribor-Pohorje provide well-developed slopes and facilities, making it one of Slovenia’s premier winter sport destinations. Beyond winter sports, the park offers scenic overlooks, ancient forest sections with protected old-growth stands, and cultural landmarks like traditional mountain lodges where hikers can experience local hospitality.

Visitors come to Pohorje for its combination of natural beauty, tranquility, and outdoor adventure potential. Its accessibility from nearby cities like Maribor and Slovenj Gradec makes it a favored destination for both day trips and prolonged stays. The park balances conservation with sustainable tourism, ensuring the protection of its delicate environment while fostering appreciation and enjoyment of Slovenia's alpine natural heritage.
